We sell personal lines insurance in part or all of the states shaded in blue*, through AAA Clubs.
*CSAA Insurance Group serves: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, D.C. and Wyoming; and portions of California, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and West Virginia. In these states coverage is limited to select counties.
Our history
The Automobile Club of California is founded at San Francisco’s Cliff House. The club’s first goal is to open Golden Gate Park to automobiles. The American Automobile Association (AAA) is officially formed two years later in Chicago.
California State Automobile Association (CSAA) is incorporated as an offshoot of the Automobile Club of California. Its stated mission is “Good Roads and Just Legislation.”
The Inter-Insurance Bureau (our historic predecessor) is created to offer auto insurance policies to members.
The company begins offering homeowners insurance to members.
The company begins offering life insurance to members.
The company acquires Western United Insurance Company.
- The company celebrates its centennial.
- The company begins offering renters insurance to members.
The company begins selling AAA Auto Insurance in Utah and Nevada through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Western United.
The company begins selling auto and homeowners insurance in Arizona, Oregon and Idaho.

- Teen driver training and discounts are rolled out.
The company begins selling insurance in Indiana and Connecticut.
- The company opens a new operations center in Glendale, Arizona.

The company begins covering members in Montana.
- The company opens a LEED Silver-certified operations center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
- The company opens a LEED Gold-certified headquarters building in Walnut Creek, California.
The company tests its first usage-based insurance program in Nevada.
- The company separates from the AAA auto club serving Northern California, Nevada and Utah; the two organizations continue working together to serve members in that region.
- The company acquires the AAA Mid-Atlantic Insurance Group, covering Members in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
The company transitions its name to CSAA Insurance Group.
- The company celebrates 100 years of selling insurance.
- The company achieves $3 billion in direct written premium.
- The company rolls out a single claims administration system, providing faster, more efficient service to members.
- The company debuts MyPolicy, an electronic site and mobile app that allows members to view their coverage, pay bills, print ID cars and more.
- The company is named Best Auto Insurer by Insure.com.
- The company launches a ridesharing endorsement to provide more comprehensive insurance coverage for drivers working for California drivers Uber, Lyft and similar services.
- AAA Shelby (Ohio) is added to roster of AAA clubs selling the company’s products; the company’s insurance becomes available through clubs in 23 states and Washington, D.C.
The company achieves $4 billion in direct written premium.
- The company launches a venture capital arm, Avanta Ventures, with an office in Mountain View, CA.
- CSAA Insurance Group’s board of directors names Tom Troy to succeed Paula Downey as the company’s chief executive officer and a member of its board of directors.
- CSAA Insurance Group provides $137 million in premium refunds to auto policyholders, reflecting fewer claims as a result of people driving less due to widespread COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders.
- Mobilitas Insurance launches as a commercial insurance company mobility sector and partners with Lyft in 11 states.
- CSAA Insurance Group releases its first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report.
- The company is among first sponsors of San Jose State University’s Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center (WIRC).
- Mobilitas Insurance is selected by Lyft to expand the ride-sharing commercial insurance coverage to 18 states (from the previous 11 states).
